The extraordinary and determined patriot
Today, I am feeling proud to write this blog about the Indian Magician of Hockey, Major Dhyan Chand. Today, I would like to share a motivational event from his life.
During the 1936 Summer Olympics Hockey Finals in Berlin, Germany, the Indian National Hockey Team achieved a glorious victory over the German Hockey Team under the exceptional leadership of Major Dhyan Chand. Adolf Hitler, the then-dictator of Germany, was also present at the match held in Berlin. After Germany's defeat, Hitler became upset and return back to his home.
In the evening, he invited Dhyan Chand to his residence. While they were having talks, Hitler asked Chand about his profession other than playing hockey. Dhyan Chand replied by saying that he holds a small post of a Lance Naik Subedar in the Indian Army.
The dictator firmly advised Chand to leave the Indian Hockey Team and join the German Hockey Team to play from Germany's side. The dictator told Chand that if he does so, Hitler would immediately make Chand the Air Field Marshal in the German Army. The dictator also added that your country (India) will never promote you from your post of a small Lance Naik Subedar in the Army. Hitler eventually tried to deter Dhyan Chand from his path.
But what Dhyan Chand said next is just impressive. He respectfully rejected the offer and said confidently to Hitler that, "It is not the responsibility of my country to promote me, it is my responsibility to promote my country". This sentence just left Hitler awestruck. Hitler had nothing else to say to Dhyan Chand.
Major Dhyan Chand was not only an exceptional hockey player but was also a true nationalist and a patriot who always thought of the betterment of his motherland. His words and contributions for the betterment of the country must and surely will be remembered in the hearts of true patriots.
